Vectorworks 2010 Export
Sent : 03/17/2010 12:12:17

I recently tried to export a drawing from Vectorworks 2010 to Artlantis Studio 2 and Vectorworks froze and I was left with the dreaded spinning beach ball. I identified the problem as a seating block drawn using the seating tool in VW 2010. When I draw a new seating block only in a new document and try and export it VW freezes immediately. If I export the file as VW 2008 and open the file in 2008 it exports to Artlantis Studio 2 without any problems. Having upgraded to VW 2010 I do not want to export back to 2008 to solve this problem.

Something should be wrong there, could you send us some screen shots? Please open a ticket in the Support Center because Abvent would also need information about your configuration and Artlantis version. Ildiko

This is what I see when exporting a seating block from VW2010 as soon as I try and export the seating block I get the Vectorworks window but without progress bar and it seems to locks up but it is still processing. After about 5 minutes it will export the file but in VW2008 it takes 10 seconds. The problem is if a have to modify the seating blocks it takes about 15 minutes in the specific drawing which is quite complex.

This is the file I am exporting on a Mac running 10.6.3 with a 3.06GHz processor and 4GB Ram. This file should take 10 seconds to export to Artlantis Studio 2 as it does with VW2008

OK, thanks. We will try to reproduce the problem. Ildiko

Did you have any luck in creating it? It happens on my Imac and my macbook pro so I assume it is not computer specific? I upgraded to VW2010 SP3 yesterday but it made no difference.

Did you have any luck in finding the reason for this problem? Any information would be gratefully received as I have to do some work on a football stadium, which as you can imagine has tens of thousands of seats so the seating tool is ideal, but not if it won't export.

Hello Barnes, From VW 2010 with the export 15.1.1 we do export without trouble the "Seats.vwx" file to ATL 2 or 3. It take a while as there's almost 1 million triangles to export. 3 minutes on PC and 8 minutes on Mac. We did test under Windows 7 64 bit and Mac OS X 10.6. How many RAM do you have what is your System? Alain Picard Abvent

Hi Alain, I have 4GB of RAM in both my laptop and desktop. The thing I find confusing is that with VW2008 it only takes 20 seconds to export the example file to Artlantis. If I export the VW2010 file as a VW2008 file and then export that to Artlantis it is very fast. I have been having to do this to save waiting but it is far from ideal. What is the difference that is causing the problem, VW2010 or Export 15.1.1? Most importantly will it improve or will I be downgrading my work to VW2008 and Export 13.1.2 for the foreseeable future? I realise these things take time to resolve I just don't understand what has changed so much between versions? Were there not the as many triangles in the old version or is it the way they are dealt with? The end result looks the same with both versions. See quick render attached. Thanks Peter
